The Brief
The client wanted an intimate eco retreat where couples could step away from everyday noise and reconnect with each other in a place that feels calm, secluded, and deeply connected to nature. The goal was to create a sanctuary with privacy, ocean views, and an atmosphere of coastal serenity grounded in Tobago’s cultural and natural heritage.
The design cascades bamboo cabins along a hillside overlooking a secluded beach, elevating each structure among the cedar trees to capture breezes and uninterrupted sea views. Cabins are oriented for privacy while remaining visually connected through subtle sightlines and shared pathways. A communal fireside space near the shoreline balances intimacy with moments of gathering, creating a rhythm between solitude and community.
Bamboo is used as the primary expressive and structural material, selected for its sustainability, carbon sequestration, and ability to integrate naturally into the landscape. Rooflines follow the slope of the hill, and bamboo finishes are paired with local stone and hardwood to root the project in its Caribbean context. Passive cooling strategies, low-impact foundations, solar integration, and rainwater harvesting support the project’s environmental goals.
Passive cooling
Air moves through the cabins naturally, requiring no machines.
Water and sun
Rainwater collected from roofs. Solar panels integrated into the design.
Experience
Light filters softly through the bamboo structures, creating shifting patterns throughout the day. Breezes move easily through the interiors, and verandas frame sweeping views of sea and forest.
Winding pathways guide guests from private cabins down to the fireside gathering space, inviting slow movement and offering quiet moments along the way. The overall feeling is secluded, warm, and connected to place.
Bacolet Bamboo Escape is envisioned as a model for sustainable, bamboo-led hospitality in the Caribbean, demonstrating how intimate luxury, ecological responsibility, and landscape-sensitive design can coexist in a single retreat experience.
